Art installation covers a different set of challenges to picture hanging. Where picture hanging deals principally with framed works on a wall, art installation covers everything else: sculptural and three-dimensional pieces, ceramics, tapestries and textile works, decorative objects, and multi-part or site-specific installations, each of which carries its own structural, material and handling requirements.

Artwork Types We Install

Different artworks demand different approaches, not just different fixings. Our specialist installers advise on and deliver complex installations including:

  • Ceramic plates and objects, which often require custom brass rod or plate-hanger systems designed around the specific piece, to avoid placing stress on delicate glazes or historic repairs.

  • Decorative and textile-based artworks, rugs and tapestries, typically installed using tension bars, Velcro-mounting systems or bespoke battens that distribute weight evenly across the fabric without causing long-term stretching or damage.

  • Asian screens and ornaments, which often require discreet, reversible fixings that respect the object's original construction, particularly with antique or lacquered pieces.

  • Sculptural and three-dimensional works, which may require a structural assessment of the floor or wall, a custom plinth, or an engineered bracket calculated for the piece's specific load and centre of gravity.

  • Mid- to large-scale and multi-part installations, which are usually planned in full before work begins, sequencing each element to fit within a single visit or a phased schedule.

Planning, Access & Safety

Challenging installations often involve difficult access, heavy or fragile works, and sensitive surroundings. Our installers hold CSCS, IPAF and PASMA qualifications, covering safe working practices on sites with these requirements as well as installations involving work at height. We are fully licensed for the hire and operation of scaffold towers and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs), all quoted transparently at cost price.

Where projects demand it, we plan multi-installer teams, detailed installation methodologies and coordinated delivery schedules to ensure efficient and safe execution. Our installation of 400 artworks aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship is a recent example, requiring close coordination with on-site teams within a live, multi-disciplinary shipyard environment to meet fixed programme deadlines.

For us, it is a term that covers art works that have unique or particular requirements for their display, as well as large and heavy frame hanging.

  • We make on site assessments of art works and objects that require installation. Often art works come with an existing solution for their hanging, and we can advise on the suitability of existing fixtures and where required suggest alternatives. Sometimes certain art works require bespoke mounts fabricated or stronger brackets made, we can source and arrange these with our partner businesses and industry connections.

  • Cost depends heavily on the piece itself, sculptural works, ceramics and tapestries often need a bespoke fixing designed for that specific object, which we usually assess from photos or an on-site visit before quoting. Bookings start from £160+VAT, with more complex or bespoke pieces quoted individually once we understand what's involved.

  • Yes. We assess the weight, material and centre of gravity of each piece to determine whether it requires a custom plinth, an engineered bracket, or a structural assessment of the floor or wall before installation.

  • Yes. Depending on the piece, this may include custom French cleats, fabricated steel brackets, polyester or steel wire suspension systems, or protective glazing for particularly vulnerable works.

  • Yes. We have completed installations within Grade II-listed buildings and other heritage properties, where fixings and handling methods must protect original surfaces, plasterwork and architectural features.

  • Beyond the wall itself, unusual pieces bring their own risk of damage if the wrong method is used, a fixing that's fine for a framed print can stress a ceramic glaze or strain the loops on a tapestry. We choose the fixing method around both the wall and the object, and where a piece needs a bespoke bracket or mount, that's designed specifically to protect it during and after installation.

  • For anything outside standard picture hanging, photos of the piece are the most useful starting point, along with its approximate weight and dimensions, the material it's made from, and whether it already has a hanging or mounting point. Knowing the setting, such as whether it's a listed building or an unusual wall finish, also helps us plan the right approach in advance.

  • This depends on whether a bespoke fixing needs to be fabricated in advance or can be adapted on-site, and whether the project involves a single piece or a sequenced, multi-part installation. Straightforward pieces with standard fixings can often be completed the same day; larger or multi-part installations are usually planned across a scheduled visit or several stages.

  • Yes. Large-scale or multi-part installations are often planned with a dedicated team and, where needed, scaffold towers or MEWPs operated by our IPAF and PASMA-qualified installers. For anything of this scale, we'll usually put together a short installation methodology in advance so the team, access equipment and schedule are all confirmed before the day.

  • Where a piece needs a bespoke fixing, such as a fabricated bracket or a custom mount, we'd recommend getting in touch as early as possible, since sourcing or fabricating the right hardware can take longer than the installation itself. Straightforward pieces with standard fixings can usually be booked in with a few days' notice.

  • Yes. For public or high-traffic environments in particular, we can specify discreet security fixings appropriate to the piece, and for especially vulnerable objects we can also advise on protective glazing or covers. This is something we typically plan in at the assessment stage, alongside the piece's primary fixing method.

  • Our standard hours are 8am to 6pm, though commercial and gallery installations are often scheduled around a live site's operating hours or a venue's public access times, including early mornings, evenings or weekends. Out-of-hours work is subject to a surcharge, confirmed as part of project planning.
